REASON FOR RUNNING: I hope that in each role I have played with AFS that I have brought something to the table. I like to think that my strong work ethic and flexible schedule helps me achieve that. As a candidate for the National Council I would rely on my experience both in business and with AFS to apply sound practices to the challenges that will open in the future of the organization.

THREE KEY ISSUES: AFS has a rich heritage that we should preserve as we adapt to the changing world. The volunteers at AFS are one of the finest groups of people that I have met. AFS attracts a culturally rich cross section of America unlike any other that I have experienced. The most pressing issues that face us are 1). Long term financial stability 2). Enhancing and adding to the strong volunteer base 3). Maintaining a good relationship with the partner countries.

HOSTING: I have hosted ten students since 1998. They have been from countries all over the world, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Denmark, Japan, and Portugal just to name a few.

OTHER EXPERIENCE: In 1991 I was instrumental in a program that assimilated young Cambodian refugees into mainstream society. Through my local Methodist Church we had a Boy Scout Troop and a basketball team that made a tremendous difference in these student’s lives. That program developed into a city-wide urban development program that is now a part of the Methodist Church’s “Communities of Shalom “. Professionally I have 25 years experience in financial services and retirement planning with Merrill Lynch. I am one of the senior partners in a wealth advisory group in Charlotte, North Carolina. I grew up in Houston, TX, and have a degree in Economics from Trinity University, San Antonio, Texas.
