2010 Host Family Profile
From AFSWiki
The Marketing Department recently compiled demographics of a typical AFS Host Family. The goal of the report is to inform future marketing and recruitment efforts with the psychographic data. 2320 host families who hosted a student in 2010 as a permanent host family were analyzed, with 200 Permanent host families chosen randomly to ensure representative data amongst the 2320 2010 host families.
Key findings:
- Approximately 1/2 are from rural areas or small towns.
- Most are what one would consider a "traditional family" with single homes, pets, two parents, 2 or 3 children and an income estimated to be more than $75,000 per year.
- Almost 3/4 are Christian. 1/4 of religious families expect the student to attend religious services with them
- Approximately half of the families in 2010 have already hosted, but very few were returnees or have their sons or daughters participating in an outbound program with AFS.
- The vast majority of families didn't decide to participate because they saw an ad or from some other external source, but because a friend connected with AFS suggested they do so.
- Host families are very involved in many types of activities in the community, especially music and activities that can be done as a family (cooking, baking, movie, traveling, bicycling, hiking and mostly meeting with family and friends).
