The following letter was recently sent in both English and Portuguese to hosted Brazilian students in order to help them prepare for their return to Brazil.

Dear AFSer,

Since your return home is getting closer, we would like to make you aware of some important points:

1. SCHOOL DOCUMENTATION

You should ask your school to provide you a certificate of attendance and grades earned during the year, also with a diploma (if it applies to you) before the end of classes. The documents should be sent to the Brazilian Consulate or Embassy depending on the country where you are. We suggest you contact the Brazilian Embassy to know how to proceed as it may vary in different countries. You can find the consular representation in your host country by accessing the “MRE” web site www.mre.gov.br click on “Assistência a Brasileiros no exterior” – click on “postos no exterior” – “embaixadas” and that should take you the e-mail and phone number of the Brazilian embassy in your host country). Ask the staff about “Legalização de Documento Escolar”.

We suggest that you check and find out the cost for this service. Provide the consulate with a stamped self-addressed envelope with your address in the country where you are living your experience so your notarized documents can be returned. BRING THIS DOCUMENTATION WITH YOU!! Don’t leave it for your host family to mail it later, because often they go astray or are lost. This would make your return to a Brazilian school or your entrance into University very difficult and AFS will not be responsible for requests to foreign school for second copies. Therefore, start taking the necessary steps right away!

2. LUGGAGE

We would like to remind you that the weight limit for domestic flights in and out of Brazil is 20 kg. In case you have more to carry, please, check about alternative ways to send home your belongings. Students often are greatly inconvenienced by having to leave their bags behind or pay heavy fines at the airports. AFS is not responsible for excess luggage issues.

3. CUSTOMS IN BRAZIL

Each person may bring up to US$ 500 of goods upon arrival. Above this amount, there is tax to pay. Those that will travel by plane, making connections right in the International Airport, at times need money for lunch or other expenses in the last minute. Those who will return by bus should remember to have the money for the bus/taxi to the station and for the interstate fare, as well as for nourishment during the trip.
